Did you know that socks are the most needed, but least donated item at shelters?
One of the main reasons homeless people go to emergency is because of foot ailments; such as blistres, fungus, chronic pain etc.
Wearing clean and dry socks is the most effective preventative measure.
As walking is the primary mode of transportation for homeless people, proper foot care carries a significant importance. Good foot health allows people facing homelessness to access community services like shelters and medical care.
Shelters do not accept used socks and underwear. People usually donate gently used clothing, and rarely buy new items to donate. Therefore, socks are one of the items that are most needed.
There is a greater demand for socks especially during the harsh conditions of winter.
We intended to do our part in responding to the needs of our community that faces homelessness. Northern Lights Relief Foundation in association with Nile Academy have launched a sock donation campaign called “Soctober” , which lasted throughout the month of October
We have been able to collect and donate 1600 socks to the Good Shepherd shelter on November 17, 2022.
Students from Nile Academy took part in this campaign by donating and contributing to the organization.
We believe efforts such as these will grow awareness within our youth, to help shape a more empathetic generation.
